GOALS

El objectivo del curso «Tecnologías y Estrategias de Negocio en Redes 5G» es proporcionar una visión holística de los aspectos técnicos y estratégicos de la próxima generación de tecnologías móviles. 

STUDENT PROFILES

El curso está dirigido a estudiantes de grado, máster y doctorado de cualquier titulación relacionada con las tecnologías en cualquier universidad del mundo, así como a los profesionales del sector TIC, que deseen actualizar sus conocimientos sobre tecnologías móviles.  

Applications from professors, research staff, doctoral students and recent graduates of master's degrees in STEM areas will be prioritized.

He has been Dean of the Official College of Telecommunications Engineers, General Director for the development of the Information Society in the Ministry of Science and Technology, Director of Digital Economy and of the National Observatory of Telecommunications and the Information Society in the Entity Business Red.es. Zoraida Frías

Zoraida Frías is a PhD Assistant Professor in the Department of Signals, Systems and Radiocommunications, where she works on the analytics of next generation mobile networks, their deployment, economics and implications for regulation and public policy. She has been a visiting researcher at the University of Pennsylvania (USA), the University of Cambridge (UK), and the Technische Universität Berlin (Germany).

Álvaro Araujo

Associate Professor

Alvaro Araujo Pinto is an Associate Professor at the Department of Electronic Engineering of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. He is currently director of the Securitas Direct-Verisure Chair at UPM and co-director of the B105 Electronic Systems Lab.

José Ignacio Alonso

Full Professor

José Ignacio Alonso is a Full Professor in the Department of Signals, Systems and Radiocommunications. He is involved in the study of the feasibility of using 5G communications for critical, operational and passenger services in railway environments, in particular its potential applicability to FRMCS, as well as in the study of cooperative communication systems in 5G.

Federico Álvarez

Associate Professor

Federico Álvarez is an Associate Professor in the Department of Signals, Systems and Radiocommunications. He teaches in the areas of communications and multimedia systems. He has participated and coordinated numerous European projects, the most related to 5G are 5G-MEDIA and 5G-EVE. He has participated in standardization bodies such as DVB-ETSI or CENELC and has made more than 100 contributions to magazines, conferences books, books and book chapters.

María Teresa Arredondo

Catedrática

María Teresa Arredondo is a Full Professor of the Department of Photonic Technology and Bioengineering. She is Director of the Life Supporting Technologies research group, and of the Vodafone Chair - UPM, and coordinator of the Biomedical Engineering Doctoral Program. She has been Director of Relations with Latin America in the Vice-Rector's Office for International Relations of the UPM, Advisor in the Unit of Women and Science in the Ministry of Education and Science, and director of the European Network of Living Labs de Salud at EIT Health.

Luis Bellido

Associate Professor

Luis Bellido is an Associate Professor in the Department of Telematic Systems Engineering. He has participated in numerous research projects, both national and European, and is the author of multiple scientific articles published in journals and conferences. His research is currently focused on software-defined networking (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV).

María Fernanda Cabrera

Associate Professor

María Fernanda Cabrera Umpiérrez is an Associate Professor in the Department of Photonic Technology and Bioengineering at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. She is director of innovation for the Life Supporting Technologies research group, chief financial officer of the universAAL IoT Alliance, and secretary of the ACTIVAGE.ORG association. She is a member of the editorial board of the IEEE Open Journal of Engineering in Medicine and Biology, and a co-founder of the IEEE-EMBS Committee for Women Engineers in Health Informatics and Bioinformatics.

David Fernández

Associate Professor

David Fernández Cambronero is a PhD in Telecommunications Engineering and an Associate Professor at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, where he has been teaching and researching since 1988. His main lines of work are Software Defined Networks, Network Virtualization and applied network technologies to Cloud Computing and Data Centers.

Giuseppe Fico

Assistant Professor

Giuseppe Fico is responsible for the health area in the LifeStech research group of the ETSIT-UPM. He is Secretary General of the European Alliance of Medical and Biological Engineering and co-chairman of the Working Group on Health of the Alliance for Internet of Things Innovation. He is currently technical director of large-scale European pilots for the use of AI, 5G, IoT and Robotics for the hospital of the future (ODIN), for digital services on chronic patients (GATEKEEPER), and the monitoring of cancer patients (BD4QoL).

Narciso García Santos

Full Professor

Narciso García is a Full Professor at the Signal Theory and Communications in the Department of Signals, Systems and Radiocommunications. Telecommunications Engineer in 1976 (National End of Degree Award) and Telecommunications Engineer Doctor in 1983 (Extraordinary Award of Doctorate). He is the PI of the Image Processing Group. His research interests include video compression, computer vision and quality of the user experience.

Enrique J Gómez

Full Professor

Enrique J Gómez is the Director of the Department of Photonic Technology and Bioengineering at ETSIT and the Bioengineering and Telemedicine Group at UPM. He is Director, Master's Degree in Biomedical Engineering at the UPM and President of the Spanish Society of Biomedical Engineering. "Honorary Life Member" of the International Federation of Medical and Biological Engineering Society.

Ramón Martínez

Full Professor

Ramón Martínez es Catedrático de Universidad en el Departamento de Señales, Sistemas y Radiocomunicaciones. Sus trabajos de investigación se centran en el procesado en array para antenas inteligentes y sistemas MIMO, en el diseño de arrays de antenas para seguimiento de satélites, y en las comunicaciones por satélite para 5G y sistemas de alta capacidad. Ha dirigido proyectos de investigación en las citadas líneas de investigación, en colaboración con la industria y organismos internacionales como la European Space Agency.

Luis Mendo is an Associate Professor at the Department of Signals, Systems and Radiocommunications. He has participated in numerous research projects related to mobile communications, and is the co-author of 4 books and more than 40 contributions in research journals and conferences. Their Current lines of research include analysis, optimization and simulation of mobile communication systems

José Ignacio Moreno

Full Professor

Jose Ignacio Moreno is a Full Professor in the Telematic Systems Engineering Department, a member of the RSTI Research Group and a Senior Member of the IEEE. He has led different national and European research projects as a principal investigator related to advanced communication networks, sensor networks, IoT systems and 5G systems.

José Manuel Riera

Full Professor

José Manuel Riera is a Full Professor in the Department of Signals, Systems and Radiocommunications. He is Director of the GTIC Research Group and the Huawei-UPM "5G" Chair. He has led nearly 50 R&D projects and contracts with companies. He is the author of more than 200 international publications. The associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation. Member of the COIT, AEIT and IEEE (Senior Member).

Joaquín Salvachúa

Associate Professor

Joaquín Salvachúa is an Associate Professor in the Department of Telematic Systems Engineering. He has participated in multiple research projects and is the author of multiple publications in journals, books and conferences https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7269-8079 and standardization activities, (RFC 8802). His research and teaching focuses on WebRTC, Cloud Computing, IOT, NoSQL Databases, Big Data processing architectures, self-sovereign identity and BlockChain distributed agreement algorithms.

Manuel Sierra

Full Professor

Manuel Sierra is a Full Professor at the Department of Signals, Systems and Radiocommunications. He works on the development of new antenna design, analysis and measurement technologies. Currently he is Vice President of the European Association of Antennas and Wave Propagation.

Víctor Villagrá

Associate Professor

Víctor Villagrá is an Associate Professor in the Department of Telematic Systems Engineering. He is coordinator of the "Official Master in Cybersecurity" of the UPM. He has participated and directed multiple research projects in the Cybersecurity area. Representative of the UPM and treasurer of RENIC (Red de National Excellence in Cybersecurity Research). Secretary of the association "Cluster de Ciberseguridad de Madrid".

Francisco Ros

Prof. Ad-Honorem Francisco Ros earned his PhD in Telecommunications Engineering from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), his PhD in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and his Diploma in Advanced Business Management from IESE.

Eloy Fustero

Former Director of Qualcomm Spain

Telecommunications Engineer from UPM-ETSIT (1986) and MBA from IUP. Until 2000, he worked in the Telefónica Group, to later focus on launching infrastructure startups and telecommunication services (Alúa, Alcorce). In 2003 he participated in the opening of Qualcomm Spain, where for 17 years, until September 2020, he was director of business development for Spain and Portugal. Currently he collaborates in immersion projects in 5G technology.

Douglas Benítez

Douglas Vaz Benítez is Senior Director of Business Development for the EMEA region and General Manager of Qualcomm for Spain and Portugal, leading the company’s operations in the region and the relationship with the main customers and partners. He joined Qualcomm in 2013 as Director of Business Development for Latin America and later became Director of Global Accounts.

Tingfang Ji

Sr Director,Engineering Qualcomm Technologies Inc.

Tingfang Ji jointed Qualcomm in 2003 and is currently a Senior Director of engineering in Wireless R&D. From 2003 to 2014, he made instrumental technical contributions towards the development of LTE/LTE-A technology and served as a vice chairman of the radio working group (RAN4) of 3GPP. Since 2014 he has been responsible for one of the main Qualcomm 5G research projects, which spear-headed Qualcomm's 5G NR air interface design/standardization efforts, pre-commercial 5G NR sub 6GHz IODT/trials, and 5G experimental macro networks. Before joining Qualcomm, Tingfang was a member of the technical staff at Bell Labs. As an inventor, he has more than 800 US patent applications. Tingfang received his Ph.D degree in E.E. from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 2001, and also holds a B.Sc. from Tsinghua University.

Dino Flore

VP Technology, Qualcomm Europe, Inc.

Dino Flore serves as Head of Technology & Products for Qualcomm in EMEA. In this role, Dino is responsible for the leadership, strategy, development and implementation of multiple technologies, driving their adoption across the region. This includes 5G, Wi-Fi, IOT, XR, AI and Automotive related products in Qualcomm’s portfolio. Dino joined Qualcomm in July 2003 as member of the Engineering Services Group (ESG). From 2005 to 2017 Dino was part of the Qualcomm Standards Group, where he held several leadership roles focused on 3GPP standardization. From March 2013 to April 2017, Dino served as chairman of 3GPP RAN, the Technical Specifications Group in 3GPP responsible for the standardization of 4G and 5G access networks. From September 2016 to September 2018 Dino was appointed as first Director General of the newly formed 5G Automotive Association (5GAA), the goal of which is to bridge the automotive and telecom industries to develop next-generation connected mobility solutions. Prior to Qualcomm, Dino held the role of senior research engineer at Arraycomm. Dino was granted more than 30 US patents in the area of mobile communication. He received a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from the Politecnico di Torino, Italy and a Master of Science in Mobile Communications from the EURECOM Institute, France. In 2019 Dino was the subject of a profile piece in the Wall Street Journal: The Yeoman Work Behind 5G Wizardry.

Miguel Griot

Sr staff, Qualcomm Technologies Inc.

Miguel is part of the Wireless Research & Development division at Qualcomm, where he is one of the lead contributors to the 3GPP System Architecture design for 5G. Miguel joined Qualcomm in 2008, and has since then been involved in 3GPP system architecture design and standardization for LTE and 5G, prototyping high level design, patent review and declaration, and systems support to product implementation. Miguel obtained his Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering from Universidad de la Republica - Uruguay in 2003, and his Master and PhD degrees in Telecommunications from University of California, Los Angeles in 2004 and 2008 respectively. He’s published his academic work in multiple IEEE Conference and Journal publications in the field of telecommunications. He is the author of 80+ US granted patents with 60+ patent applications pending.

Lorenzo Casaccia

VP Technical Standards, Qualcomm

Lorenzo leads Qualcomm’s 3GPP team including the recent creation of the 5G standards and its evolution. Lorenzo joined Qualcomm in 2000 and has been with the company since then, covering a variety of roles related to wireless communication, including research and system design, regulatory, product, and technology standardization. Lorenzo holds university degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Turin Polytechnic, in Telecommunication from the Eurecom Institute, France, and in Philosophy and Philosophy of Knowledge from the Rome University. He is the author of over 50 US granted patents.

Juan Carlos García

Director de Innovación Tecnológica y Ecosistemas, Telefónica

Juan Carlos is Director of Technological Innovation and Ecosystems at Telefonica, manages the Innovation Plan and leads projects such as Edge Computing, Private Networks or Network Slicing. He directs Telefonica's participation in industry standards and forums (O-RAN, ETSI, 3GPP, TMForum, etc). He represents Telefonica in the Technology Group of the GSMA, where he chairs the Telco Edge taskforce, and on the Board of the Telecom Infra Project and chairs the Steering Committee of 5TONIC (Laboratory and 5G ecosystem).

Carlos Carazo

Director de Tecnología y Operaciones, Telefónica

Carlos Carazo has a degree in Physical Sciences from the Complutense University and an MBA from the UPM. Carlos has more than 25 years of experience in telecommunications, where he started at Telefónica Móviles in 1995, the year the mobile industry took off. During his first years at Telefónica he was responsible for the launch of new products on smart grids, mobile internet, financial services or mobile advertising. Later, he joined Telefónica onthespot as Director of Technology and Operations and member of the management committee. In 2015 he was appointed Global IoT Platforms & Technology Director at TDigital. Currently he is the CTO of the new company Telefónica IoT & BigData TECH, where he is responsible for platform development, technological strategy and global operations.

Iván Rejón

Head of Government, Policy Advocacy and Strategy

Iván Rejón es el Head of Gobernment, Policy Advocacy and Strategy de Ericsson en Iberia. Previamente trabajó en Oliver Wyman, Arthur Andersen y Everis donde era el socio responsable de consultoría de negocio para el área de Telecomunicaciones. Iván Rejón es Ingeniero de Telecocunicación por la UPM y Master por l’École Nationale Supérieure ses Télécommunications de Paris. Además se graduó en Management Science por la Universidad de Stanford University.

Chirag Patel

Engineer, Principal/Mgr., Qualcomm Technologies

Chirag Patel is a Principal Engr./Mgr. in the Corp. R&D AI Research team at Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. As AI Model Efficiency Toolkit (AIMET) project lead, he is responsible for bringing neural network model efficiency R&D to practice working with inter-disciplinary teams, feature roadmap planning, and customer engagements. He also leads projects for enriching smartphone UX experience using a combination of machine learning and low power, always-on sensors, and forward-looking technologies. He has 10+ years of experience in wireless communications as a research engineer, leading design & standardization of standalone LTE in unlicensed spectrum and 3G/4G small cell technologies. He holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta.

Tijmen Blankevoort

Engineer, Senior Staff Mgr., Qualcomm Technologies Netherlands B.V.

Tijmen Blankevoort is the team lead for compression and quantization research at Qualcomm. With a background in Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence, he started a deep learning start-up in 2013 together with Professor Max Welling, which was acquired by Qualcomm in 2017. The Amsterdam and San Diego based compression/quantization research team focusses on making models deployed to device more efficient and ensures that low-bit quantization can be done without a problem. There is also a special focus on making the process as automatic as possible. Tijmen and his team are conducting new research in this area, and simultaneously bridging the gap between research and practice.

Maite Aparicio

GERENTE OPEN RAN E INNOVACIÓN RAN, TELEFÓNICA-GCTIO

Telecommunications Engineer from UPM-ETSIT (1999). She joined Telefónica I + D in 1999, where she was involved in activities of RAN planning and optimization for 2G/3G/4G. Currently, she leads a team that drives the development of the Open RAN solution for Telefonica, with the objective of ensuring that this Open RAN solution fulfills the technical and economic requirements. She is also in charge of RAN innovation activities (B5G and 6G) in the Global CTIO team of Telefónica.

Ricardo Anaya

Product manager, Qualcomm

Con veinte años de experiencia en la industria de telecomunicaciones en las áreas de ventas, mercadotecnia, desarrollo de producto y de nuevos negocios; Ricardo Anaya es promotor y responsable tecnológico de los productos de conectividad, cómputo móvil e infraestructura de Qualcomm en la región norte de Latinoamérica. Trabaja cerca de los operadores móviles y fabricantes de equipos originales (OEM), enfocado principalmente en aquellos que cuentan con algún tipo de conexión inalámbrica.

Kiran Mukkavilli

Dr. Kiran Mukkavilli is a Sr. Director of Engineering in Qualcomm Wireless Research where he currently leads the systems research team for sub-7GHz technologies of 5G. He joined Qualcomm in 2003, holds more than 150 granted U.S. patents, and has been involved in system design, standardization, implementation and commercialization of a variety of projects at Qualcomm.He successfully led Qualcomm’s effort to set up industry’s first end to end 3GPP Rel 15 spec compliant 5G NR call with the leading infra vendors using proto UE implementation. Dr. Mukkavilli received his M.S. and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Rice University and holds Bachelor of Technology from Indian Institute of Technology, Madras.

Riccardo Calabro

Senior Director, Product Marketing Qualcomm CDMA Technologies GmbH

He leads the Qualcomm Automotive Telematics, Connectivity, and C-V2X European Product Marketing Team and has been working in Automotive from the very early stages of connected cars. Riccardo joined Qualcomm in 2004 working in the Modem Engineering team, moving later to Product Marketing functions working on Mobile, IoT as well as Automotive segments. Before joining Qualcomm, Riccardo had different leading roles in Engineering and Product departments at Siemens, Marconi Mobile and Allied Telesys. Riccardo holds a Master of Science in Electronic Engineering, Microelectronics, from Genova Engineering University in Italy.

Juan Montojo

VP of Engineering at Qualcomm’s Corporate Standards group

Juan Montojo has Telecommunications Engineering degrees from the Technical University of Catalonia, Barcelona, Spain, and Institut Eurecom, Sophia Antipolis, France, as well as, MS and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Southern California (USC) and University of California San Diego (UCSD), respectively. Dr. Montojo joined Qualcomm in San Diego in January 1997 and has worked in the system design and standardization of various communication systems including Globalstar, 3G, 4G, 5G, and WiFi as part of the corporate R&D and Standards groups. He led the 3GPP PHY layer standardization of WCDMA Rel-7 and of LTE Rel-8, 9, 10, and part of 11. He led the Qualcomm Research Germany group from Nov ’11 to July ’15 working on Gbps cable modem design and IEEE standardization, as well as, 802.11ah modem design and implementation. Upon his return to San Diego, Dr. Montojo led the system design of 5G NR unlicensed and spectrum sharing until he moved back to the 3GPP team in January ‘17 where he helped with the execution of the 5G NR acceleration. Currently, Dr. Montojo leads Qualcomm’s 3GPP team. Dr. Montojo has been a recipient of QCT’s Upendra Patel Achievement Awards for Outstanding Contributions to LTE, Corporate R&D’s Excellence award for Management of Qualcomm Research Germany, and IP Excellence award for his contributions to 5G. Dr. Montojo has over 700 granted US patents and over 6,000 granted patents world-wide.
